TIA: Liberia

i’m in love with mama susu

We had takeout last night for Mark’s birthday dinner (I know, I know…I’m sooo domestic). Mark picked the place and the menu; I came along for the ride.  When we arrived at the restaurant, Mama Susu greeted us, smothered me with kisses, and gave us beers while waiting for our food to finish.

We sat and chatted a bit.  She was shocked I’d never had lamb; I explained we Texans prefer beef.  She told us about moving to Liberia from Lebanon 40 years ago; I told her about the clinic I may be running.  She asked what my folks thought about me being in Liberia then proceeded to offer to be my mom in Liberia.

When our food was ready, she threw in a bottle of wine as a gift for Mark’s birthday. Mama Susu then sent us home with enough food for easily six people: Greek salad, hummus, roasted lamb with cinnamon rice.  It was quite possibly the best meal I’ve ever had.

We probably should have ordered dessert too: my key lime pie was a little, umm, too out of the box.  It tasted like lime sugar.  Alas, making it gave me a chance to play with my new cupcake decorating gear (thanks Lauren, Eric & Charles) — you’ll note I got a little over-excited about decorating and that I should probably invest in a pie pan.

We topped the food off with a couple bottles of wine, a few episodes of How I Met Your Mother, and Wii tennis.  Happy birthday, hubs ;)
